Yup, she's a beauty, her high bow perfect for Lakes Erie and Ontario. She must have sailed from Erie up the Welland Canal to the west of Niagara Falls, broke out on Ontario and made for the Port of Oswego, where I lived at one time. From there she would have encountered seven locks down the Oswego River (canal) to Brewerton, then east across the 35 mile stretch of Oneida Lake. I can imagine the crew got ready for periods of boredom after a few of the 21 locks she would encounter as she made her way through the Mohawk Valley and across New York State. In that total are five in a row in a seven mile stretch above Cohoes, and the final lock at Green Island across the Hudson from Troy. If you've never been through a lock, get ready to wait your turn, possibly bump hulls if you have to share "the ride" with other boats, and wait what seems forever for the lock to fill with water, pumped by equipment that has not been replaced since 1913. (They custom build each repair part.) If invited along, I would have waited to board at New York Harbor, much preferring the spaciousness of ocean travel and the hominess the Intercoastal Waterway. But either way, a lovely trip.

Fished with Gator in the mid-80's, about a year after the Santo Rosario sinking in Florida. I was a 23 year old hillbilly searching for adventure and had never been to sea. He was fishing a little 28 footer owned by Buck something or other called Sea Gypsy. Then later, in early '86 we went to Georgetown and he ran the Carol Jean owned by Edwin Jayroe while I worked as deckhand for him. I went back over to the inlet on the Still Crazy and wasn't the one who fell asleep that spring and ran Carol Jean on the jetty at Georgetown lol. Spoke with Edwin in '03 or '04 and he said Gator was running a bottom fishing boat down around Debidue. Gosh it was great reading about the old days.

We found a copy of this wonderful local paper while staying in Garden City last month. My family has vacationed in the Murrells Inlet, Garden city area for 50 years this year and the area seems more like a second home now. My mother and father fished many hours in the inlet and met and became good friends back in the sixties with many of the local families. We really enjoyed the article about the Bay Harbor Hotel, and recalling Sam Barwick, the bait shop and the marina. I have ordered the book "Murrells Inlet: Memories, Memiors and Miracles " and cant wait to catch up on more MI history.
